Touchscreen technology is everywhere nowadays from medical equipments to small gadgets… touch screen is definitely IN!
According to Wikipedia, a touchscreen is a display which can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area. The term generally refers to “touch” or “contact” to the display of the device by a finger or hand. Touchscreens can also sense other passive objects, such as a stylus.
Anyway, touchscreens started way back in the 60s. It was able to gain visibility through PLATO project’s computer-assisted learning terminal that came out in 1972. Touchscreen technology has been considered as an exotic and expensive technology that is only suitable for use in high-power applications such as air traffic control systems or nuclear power plant controllers. However, due to the touchscreen’s simplicity and universal appeal, more and more people approve of this technology. It has been around for more than three decades but it continues to transform access to complex electronic systems and is now used by both novice and experienced computer users.
What makes touchscreen appealing is the fact that it can be used by anyone regardless of language, education or socioeconomic or cultural background which bridges the gap between today’s sophisticated hardware and the untrained user, making touchscreens far less intimidating than keyboards, mice or trackballs to those who don’t use the computers.
Today, touchscreen devices play an important role in digital appliances such as PDA’s, I-pods, game consoles and mobile phones… so why not have a touchscreen POS and experience the convenience of the touchscreen technology?
